10 Methods for Reducing Office Stress

People often don't realize that they can make their office environment less stressful each day. Focusing on deadlines and keeping customers satisfied are the main objectives of the day. But, people don't stop to think that while working day after day, they need to try to have the most ergonomic products possible.

1. Office chairs that are adjustable are the best investment. The increasingly popular ergonomic office chairs have many adjustable features such as arm rests, height and back support. The ability to make these changes with ergonomic office chairs will bring more comfortable working conditions to the workers.

2. Check to make sure there is ample support for the back. This should take care of itself with an ergonomic office chair so that each person's back has enough support throughout the day. Without proper support, the back will get weak and will get tense and painful.

3. Take mini-breaks during the day. It may be helpful for each worker to set a timer so they will remember to move every hour or so. Every so often, positions should be changed by moving around. Taking a break, even if it's only for a few minutes to grab a snack or drink, can help relieve stress and make the day go faster.

4. Eyes should be level with the top of the computer screen. Undue stress will be put on the shoulders, back and neck if the head is tilted up, down or sideways. This can be avoided by keeping the computer screen level with the eyes.

5. It is important to eliminate glare on the monitor. Eye strain can be the result of a strong glare on the computer screen. Glare can be avoided by moving furniture around.

6. Feet should always touch the floor. If the feet don't touch the floor, the worker's back and legs need a footstool. Investing in adjustable foot stools and ergonomic desks can give each worker the ability to make the proper adjustments.

7. Make it a practice to do some low key exercises throughout the day. Mini-breaks can include some stretches, knee bends, and walks. Workers will be more comfortable when they work if they will take the time to move and stretch during the day.

8. The temperature at the office should be as comfortable as possible, based on the weather outside. In most offices, employees will not have the privilege of controlling the temperature, so each one needs to be prepared. For extra chilly days, an extra layer of clothing may be necessary. A small fan near the desk can keep things cool if the office tends to be too warm. Proper hydration can be achieved by drinking cool or warm drinks throughout the day, which will result in less fatigue and healthier bodies.

9. Workers can avoid reaching and twisting when they place items in the right places on their desks. Keep staplers, tape, paper clips and other important office supplies close by so can reach them easily. If a worker constantly needs one or two folders, consider placing the file cabinet closer or having a place near their desk where they can organize files and have them handy as needed. Each worker should keep the items they need close by so they can save themselves from reaching and turning.

10. Practice stress reducing techniques. Bad days are experienced by everyone, when they want to pack up their bags and just go home. This is not a reasonable alternative, however, and every person must learn to handle the stress throughout the day. Conflict can result from dealing with people day after day. Employers can help their workers have a plan on how to deal with office conflict and stress when it does come. Some ways to reduce stress are to eat a healthy diet, take short walks, keep a journal and confide in a friend.

It's not difficult to have a healthy office, but it take some extra thought. Most of these things can be taken care of with little cost, but a little time and effort are required. Taking the time to have proper office equipment, keeping everyone healthy and arranging workstations will all help to make work easier and lighten the burden on each person.
